The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has provided essential relief materials to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Rivers State. This initiative forms part of the commission's humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the impact of the current economic challenges on inmates housed within various custodial facilities across the state.

During the presentation of the items, Mr. Jeremiah Oritsejolone, the NDDC's Director of Social Services, speaking on behalf of the Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, highlighted that this intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope Agenda' and the transformative direction of the current NDDC leadership. This information was released in a statement disseminated to journalists on Saturday from Port Harcourt by Seledei Thompson-Wakama, the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs.

Oritsejolone emphasized the commission's dedication to assisting vulnerable populations and institutions throughout the Niger Delta region. He stated, “The NDDC recognises the current global economic hardship, which has also affected Nigeria. Although we cannot reach every community and institution at the same time, we deliberately identify the most vulnerable communities and organisations for intervention to help alleviate their suffering.” He further noted that the commission has already supplied relief items to communities impacted by floods and environmental degradation this year, reaffirming their commitment to extending similar support to other deserving groups.

He added, “The inmates in our correctional centres are members of our society. They are our brothers and sisters, and many of them will eventually reintegrate into their communities. It is therefore important that we support them and contribute to their welfare.” The Director also lauded Dr. Samuel Ogbuku's NDDC management for consistently implementing people-focused initiatives that improve the lives of Niger Delta residents.

Engr. Okezie Ule, the Director of the NDDC Rivers State Office, characterized the donation as a testament to the commission's appreciation for the crucial role the Nigerian Correctional Service plays in upholding peace, security, and the rule of law. He remarked, “The presence of this delegation today is an indication that we recognise and appreciate the invaluable services rendered by the Nigerian Correctional Service. Without institutions like yours, maintaining law and order in society would be difficult.”

In response, Mr. Richard Moses Williams, the Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rivers State Command, expressed profound gratitude to the NDDC for their timely and compassionate support for the inmates. He stated, “Today is indeed a special day for the officers, staff, and inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Rivers State. This gesture demonstrates that the NDDC understands the importance of caring for the less privileged in society.” He gave assurances that the donated materials would be distributed fairly among all custodial centres in the state, ensuring every inmate benefits from the gesture.

Ambassador Ipalibo Madodoye, the Rivers State Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also praised the NDDC's initiative, noting its consistency with several SDGs, including Quality Education, Gender Equality and Inclusion, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. He confirmed the SDG Office's continued collaboration with the NDDC to promote programs that enhance the well-being of women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. Mrs. Chioma Nwakwue, the Deputy Director of Social Services, concluded by thanking the NCoS management and staff for their cooperation and expressed hope that the relief materials would reach all inmates in need, commending the officers for their dedication.
