Tanker Explosion Triggers Massive Inferno at Abuja Filling Station; Three Firefighters Injured

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Panic gripped residents and business owners in the Garki Area 3 district of the Federal Capital Territory late Thursday night after a massive fire broke out at the AYM Shafa Filling Station along Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Way.

​The incident, which occurred around 9:44 PM, was sparked when a petroleum tanker discharging Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded on the premises. The blast sent thick flames and heavy black smoke into the night sky, damaging nearby commercial properties, including an adjoining three-storey building belonging to the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS).

​Casualties and Operational Impact

​The Federal Fire Service (FFS) and FCT Fire Service confirmed that three firefighters sustained varying degrees of injuries during the intensive inter-agency containment operation.

​Critical Care: One firefighter suffered severe injuries and is currently receiving specialized treatment at the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja.

​Hospitalizations: Two other emergency responders were rushed to Alliance Hospital in Area 11, Garki, for medical care.

​Civilian Injuries: Four adult male civilians also sustained minor injuries; they were evacuated by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) medical units, treated at a nearby facility, and subsequently discharged.

​Fire Extinguished After Hours-Long Battle

​The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, personally served as Incident Commander, remaining on-site alongside joint personnel from NEMA, the Nigeria Police Force, and local security authorities into the early hours of Friday morning.

​Fire crews utilized multiple heavy firefighting appliances, high-pressure water jets, and chemical foam compound to suppress the multi-structure blaze before it could reach adjacent residential quarters and the nearby Apo corridor.
