Peter Obi Pledges Prison Time for Election Riggers as President

Peter Obi has declared that under his leadership, any individual found guilty of electoral malpractice will face imprisonment. The presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made this assertion on Thursday, September 24, during a live interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time program.

Obi was addressing crucial issues such as electoral integrity, the dynamics of opposition politics, and the state of democratic governance, with a keen eye on the upcoming 2027 presidential election. Emphasizing his resolve, Obi stated: "I’ve said it, and I’ll say it again: if I am the serving president of this country, whoever rigs elections will be in jail. Even for one vote, you will be in jail."

Furthermore, the former governor of Anambra State committed to ensuring that political parties, including those in opposition, would not experience harassment during his tenure. He stressed that his administration would actively involve them in critical national decision-making processes. Obi specifically mentioned that members of the opposition would be consulted on government matters whenever he travels out of the country.

During the interview, Obi also voiced his disapproval of the "restrictions" that have reportedly been placed on his campaign activities in various states. He insisted that all candidates should be afforded the liberty to campaign freely and openly, irrespective of their political affiliations.
