Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, Delta Bye-Elections Provide Vital Lessons for INEC's 2027 Preparations

Nigeria's electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has characterised the recently concluded bye-elections across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states as crucial real-world assessments that will inform its strategies for the upcoming 2027 General Election. This declaration was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), on Saturday, as he personally oversaw operations from the Commission's National Situation Room located at its Abuja headquarters.

A statement released and endorsed by Mr. Adedayo Oketola, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, confirmed that the Commission conducted four legislative bye-elections. These included the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, the Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State, and the Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Professor Amupitan emphasised that every off-cycle electoral contest serves as an essential dress rehearsal for the general elections, asserting that no election should be dismissed as insignificant or routine. He stated, “These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election. We must resist the temptation to view any exercise as merely an ordinary bye-election. Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 General Election, allowing us to continuously audit our logistics framework, stress-test our technological deployment, and evaluate administrative field readiness.”

Meanwhile, reports from the affected states indicated varying experiences. In Kano, the Commissioner of Police commended residents for maintaining peaceful conduct during the polls. However, in Delta State, a group called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in clashes between the APC and NDC during the bye-election. Conversely, the Gombe State governor and other stakeholders lauded the smooth voting process observed in their state.

While monitoring the elections alongside National Commissioners and other senior management officials, Professor Amupitan received live operational reports from the various states. He also used the opportunity to reassure Nigerians of INEC's unwavering commitment to upholding electoral integrity, highlighting that any operational challenges identified prior to the polls were promptly addressed.

He further elaborated, “Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution. Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively. We remain committed to refining our processes so that every subsequent exercise reflects higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.” The INEC chairman extended his gratitude to the staff in the Situation Room, particularly the technical team, for their role in ensuring the seamless monitoring of the multi-state exercise and efficient assessment of field performance without any hitches.
