Arizona Parents Charged After Five-Year-Old's Hot Car Death During Celebration

A heartbreaking incident in Arizona has led to the death of a five-year-old boy, Theo Sabo, after he was reportedly left in a scorching vehicle while his family hosted a party. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday, September 13, when Theo's family returned home around 1 p.m. from a church baptism.

With approximately 50 friends and relatives gathered for a celebration at their Peoria residence, it took more than two and a half hours before anyone realized Theo was missing. The family eventually found the young boy unresponsive inside their car, which had become a deathtrap under the day's blistering 106-degree Fahrenheit temperatures, according to historical weather data. Paramedics administered CPR at the scene before Theo was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

Following the discovery, Theo's parents, 50-year-old Mihail Sabo and 45-year-old Anca Sabo, were taken into custody and subsequently charged with negligent homicide and child abuse. The couple are also parents to four other children, aged 18, 15, 14, and 9.

During police questioning, Mihail Sabo reportedly told officers he had instructed his 14-year-old son to ensure Theo was brought out of the car upon their arrival home. However, the teenager disputed this account, telling authorities he received no such instruction.

The parents appeared in separate court hearings on Monday, September 14, at the Maricopa County Superior Court. A livestream of the proceedings showed Anca Sabo visibly distressed and sobbing throughout her hearing, while her husband, Mihail, remained largely silent with his head bowed during his appearance.

Leah Dodd, the couple's defense attorney, emphasized the profound nature of the event during Anca's hearing, stating, "This was a, I can’t overstress this, a tragedy." Dodd reiterated Mihail's claim about asking their 14-year-old son to retrieve Theo, arguing, "Mom is hosting a party at their home, assumes dad is gonna get [Theo]. Dad asks the 14-year-old. That’s not asking a young child to get another child out of the vehicle." She added that Theo "was sleeping, and there was a lot going on, but this does not deviate from what a normal person would do in this situation," as Anca clutched her chest and wept.

Conversely, Maricopa County Attorney Brooke Gaunt highlighted the duration of the child's absence, asserting that "the child was in the car for more than two and a half hours and the parents were not aware of his location during that whole time."

The defense attorney maintained that charges of criminally negligent homicide and child abuse were disproportionate given the circumstances, describing their son's death as an "unimaginable tragedy." Dodd pointed out Anca's actions after finding Theo, stating, "She called 911, she administered life-saving efforts, she answered all questions of detectives. This is not someone who is running away." She concluded that "Everything that she and her husband did upon finding the child in the vehicle was standard care." At one point, Anca loudly wailed in court, pleading with the judge, "I want to see my kids. Please let me see my kids."

Mihail's court appearance, which immediately followed his wife's, saw him looking disheveled and displaying minimal emotion, often keeping his head down. As co-defendants in their respective cases, both Mihail and Anca were granted a $150,000 bond each, with a strict no-contact order between them. They are, however, permitted supervised visits with their four surviving children.

Dodd also informed the court that the couple has been married for nearly two decades and have resided in the Arizona area since 2011. An online fundraiser set up for the family conveyed the deep sorrow, stating, "Theo was deeply loved, and his precious life will never be forgotten. Thank you for loving, praying for, and supporting the Sabo family as they walk through this unimaginable loss." Mihail and Anca Sabo are scheduled to return to court on September 21.
