The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has firmly stated that the Aso Rock Presidential Villa will be open for a new occupant in 2027, citing constitutional provisions. This declaration by Atiku Abubakar serves as a rejoinder to comments made by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu. The revered monarch had, during a courtesy call from the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, led by Abdulaziz Yari, proclaimed that there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock for the next five years, signaling his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election aspirations.

In his counter-statement, which was disseminated via social media by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Atiku underscored that a traditional ruler lacks the authority to endorse any candidate, specifically Tinubu, on behalf of Nigeria's populace exceeding 200 million. He stressed that the nation's voters, through the democratic process of the ballot box, and not traditional leaders, are the ultimate arbiters of election results.

Atiku then directly addressed the Oba, stating, “Kabiyesi, with due respect, Aso Rock is not an extension of your palace, and Nigeria’s presidency is not a royal stool for you to allocate.“ He reiterated his stance, asserting, “There will be a vacancy in 2027 because the Constitution says so. You may endorse Tinubu, but you cannot endorse him on behalf of over 200 million Nigerians." He further clarified that “The people, and not kings, courtiers or APC campaign councils, will decide that through the ballot." Highlighting the contrast in lived experiences, Atiku remarked, “While the palace may be insulated from today’s hunger, insecurity and crushing cost of living, millions of Nigerians are counting every painful day until 2027." Concluding his message, he stated, “Kabiyesi, democracy is not coronation. You may have a preferred candidate, but you do not have the authority to declare Nigeria’s presidential election settled before Nigerians vote. kaaaabiyesi oooooo.”
