Osun Gubernatorial Poll Concludes as INEC Eyes 2027 Preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially shut down its Situation Room, a move that follows the successful conclusion of the August 15 Osun State governorship election and the subsequent announcement of results in the early hours of Sunday. This development was communicated by the commission through an official statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) platform on Sunday.

During an address to staff within the Situation Room, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, lauded their unwavering dedication, significant sacrifices, and exemplary professionalism demonstrated throughout the election cycle. The official statement highlighted his appreciation for personnel across the commission's headquarters, its offices in Osun State and various local governments, and all field operatives, especially those at polling units and technical support teams. Professor Amupitan specifically recognized the extensive hours committed by staff, emphasizing that many forfeited family time and operated under challenging circumstances to ensure the election's smooth execution and uphold the integrity of the democratic process.

Furthermore, the INEC chairman credited the peaceful conduct observed during the polls to divine grace and protection. Professor Amupitan characterized the Osun election as “a milestone, not a destination,” underscoring the necessity for the insights and practical experiences garnered to be instrumental in shaping the commission's strategic planning for the upcoming 2027 general election.

Professor Amupitan then implored staff members to uphold vigilance, ensure transparency, maintain professionalism, and exercise strict neutrality in carrying out their duties. He stated, “Let us learn from our experience, refine our strategies and approach the upcoming national task with renewed vigour and absolute neutrality. Let us remain steadfast in our duty, knowing that we are the gatekeepers of our nation’s democracy.”

In conclusion, Amupitan exhorted staff to sustain their commitment to the commission, acknowledging its pivotal role in the sustenance of Nigeria's democratic system. Following this, the commission formally announced the closure of the Osun Situation Room, thereby concluding its centralized monitoring and supervisory activities for the recently concluded governorship election.

Earlier on Sunday, around 7:24 am, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, serving as the State Returning Officer, had officially pronounced Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, as the victor of the election. Governor Adeleke secured a total of 511,067 votes, surpassing his main contender, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who garnered 444,815 votes. The incumbent governor triumphed in 19 out of the 30 local government areas in the state, while Oyebamiji claimed victory in the remaining 11.
