Ex-Honduran President Hernandez Lands Home After Trump's Pardon

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has made his return to his home country this past Sunday, following a surprising pardon from then-President Donald Trump last year. Hernandez had been serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking before the pardon. Upon landing in a private aircraft near Tegucigalpa, the nation's capital, he proceeded to a rally held in the town of Comayagua.

Addressing hundreds of his supporters from a farm, Hernandez conveyed his gratitude to Trump for the pardon. He quoted Trump, stating, “The most well-informed president in the world said: ‘I reviewed it — my team and I reviewed it in detail — and a tremendous injustice has been committed here; it is a witch hunt, it is the use of the justice system as a political weapon.'”

Hernandez is slated to appear in court on August 3 to respond to fraud and money-laundering allegations, which he vehemently denies, asserting he is a continuous target of “persecution.” He faces accusations of diverting $2 million in public funds to finance his initial presidential campaign. A judge had previously suspended an arrest warrant against him after he committed to appearing voluntarily. Hernandez declared, “The last thing I’m going to do is hang my head when the truth is on my side.”

The former leader governed the Central American nation from 2014 to 2022. Shortly after his tenure ended, his left-leaning successor, Xiomara Castro, facilitated his extradition to the US to face drug trafficking charges. In 2024, a US court found him guilty of conspiring with cartel leaders, including Mexico’s notorious Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, to smuggle vast quantities of cocaine into the United States.

However, in a move that astonished many, Trump granted Hernandez a pardon just days before Honduras's presidential election last year. This intervention also saw Trump threaten to cut aid to Honduras if Hernandez’s ally, conservative Nasry Asfura, did not win. Trump’s actions ignited a significant uproar in Honduras, with Castro and her allies alleging foreign interference in the election, which Asfura ultimately won.

The pardon also drew accusations of hypocrisy against Trump, particularly as he had recently initiated a military campaign against alleged cartel-affiliated drug traffickers in Latin America. When granting the pardon, Trump had claimed, without providing evidence, that Hernandez was “set up” by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

Eva Amador, a 56-year-old supporter of the former president, expressed her joy on Sunday, holding a banner thanking Trump. “We are very happy and very excited” to have him back, she stated.

Hernandez had previously indicated he was returning “without any electoral ambitions.” Nevertheless, during his Sunday speech, he left the door open for a return to politics if he observed “radicalism” resurfacing in Honduras, referring to the previous left-wing government.

His re-election in 2017 was marred by controversy, initially due to a Supreme Court decision that enabled him to serve a consecutive term despite a constitutional prohibition, followed by widespread claims of voting irregularities. Protests erupted after the vote, leading Hernandez to order a crackdown that resulted in the deaths of approximately thirty people. Legal analyst Joaquin Mejia told AFP that Hernandez's “return with complete impunity and without punishment for those crimes is a tremendous slap in the face to the victims.”
