Adire NYSC Uniform: Federal Government Yet to Make Final Call

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, on Thursday, moved to clear the air regarding reports that the Federal Government had officially adopted Adire fabric as the new uniform for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. His clarification came just hours after his initial remarks on the proposed change sparked significant public discussion.
Taking to his official X account, @ayowisdom_, Olawande stated that news outlets suggesting Adire would replace the well-known khaki uniform had misrepresented his comments made during an interview on Channels Television’s "The Morning Brief."
The Minister explained that while Adire and Ankara were indeed mentioned during his television appearance, they were presented solely as examples of various proposals currently under consideration within the ongoing reform process for the NYSC scheme. He emphasized, “No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design.”
He further elaborated on his intent, saying, “My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.”
According to Olawande, the government is actively exploring different options that would satisfy multiple criteria, including “professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride.” He assured that any ultimate decision would be informed by extensive consultations with stakeholders and would prioritize the best interests of both the NYSC and Nigeria as a whole.
The Minister also appealed to Nigerians not to let the discourse surrounding the proposed uniform changes overshadow the broader objectives of the ongoing reforms. He highlighted that these reforms are “designed to make the scheme more relevant to today’s realities by improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and creating a smoother transition from education to productive careers.”
He reiterated, “While conversations around the uniform are understandable, they should not overshadow the far-reaching reforms aimed at empowering millions of Nigerian youths and positioning the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.”
The suggestion of a uniform change is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the 53-year-old NYSC scheme, which received approval from the Federal Executive Council on Monday. This extensive reform also encompasses aspects like skills-based deployment for corps members, civilian operational leadership for the scheme, and amendments to the NYSC Act.
During his Channels Television interview, Olawande had cited Adire and Ankara as potential alternatives to the traditional NYSC khaki uniform, comments that quickly gained traction across social media platforms. The idea generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians criticizing it as a misdirection of priorities and expressing concerns that it might unfairly favor certain regions of the country. Conversely, others welcomed the proposal, viewing it as a potential catalyst for boosting local textile manufacturing and fostering entrepreneurship.
Amidst the public outcry and discussions, the Minister issued his clarification, firmly stressing that Adire has not been officially adopted as the new NYSC uniform and that a conclusive decision on the matter is yet to be reached.
