The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has retracted his earlier assertion regarding the alleged adoption of Adire fabric as a replacement for the National Youth Service Corps' (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform. This clarification comes after his initial comments suggested a definitive shift in the 53-year-old scheme's attire, forming part of a broader reform package.

During a recent appearance on Channels Television, Olawande had indicated that Adire would take the place of khaki, explaining that this initiative aimed to bolster indigenous textile production and ensure government expenditure circulated within the Nigerian economy. This proposed alteration to the uniform was presented as an integral component of the extensive reforms for the NYSC scheme, which received approval from the Federal Executive Council just last Monday.

However, as public discourse intensified over the prospect of Adire replacing khaki, Minister Olawande moved to provide an updated perspective. In a statement disseminated via his official X account, he clarified that news reports implying Adire's definite adoption as the new uniform misrepresented his initial remarks made during the television interview.

He elaborated that while he did reference Adire and Ankara fabrics during the discussion, these were merely illustrative examples of potential options under consideration within the ongoing reform discussions for the scheme. Olawande firmly stated, “No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design.”

Further emphasizing his point, the Minister explained, “My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.” He also mentioned that the government is evaluating various alternatives that “tick all the right boxes in terms of professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride.” Olawande concluded by assuring the public that any ultimate decision would emerge from comprehensive consultations with stakeholders, prioritizing the best interests of both the NYSC and the nation.
