Pentagon Enlists Elon Musk for Future War Study Leadership

Full Story
Tech magnate Elon Musk is set to rejoin the advisory fold for US President Donald Trump’s administration, taking on a crucial role as a co-leader in a Pentagon initiative focused on charting the future of warfare. This marks Musk's return to official government service, having previously helmed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) before his departure in May 2025, following a public disagreement with President Trump.
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced the project, dubbed “Project Meridian,” during a speech delivered at the Quantico military base. Hegseth described the undertaking as "an effort led by America’s best minds to study the future of warfare." He emphasized the unique advantage the US possesses, stating, "We are leveraging a unique source of American advantage, one our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders and our technologists."
Musk will share leadership responsibilities for Project Meridian with Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of defense technology firm Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich, the 83-year-old Republican former Speaker of the House.
Despite his past public spat with President Trump over spending legislation, Musk had been a vocal supporter of Trump's return to the White House. Following their high-profile disagreement, he later resumed significant contributions to Republican causes, including multi-million dollar donations to various candidates and conservative political organizations.
Hegseth further clarified the project’s objectives, stating it aims to " creatively look to the future and identify the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master." The team for Project Meridian will comprise carefully selected leaders from the private sector and subject matter experts drawn from innovation, academic, and policy circles. The Pentagon chief has instructed that the project's findings be finalized and submitted within a 120-day timeframe.
In related developments, the Nobel Peace Prize jury is reportedly proceeding with caution following Trump's campaign, while the US Defence Secretary announced a 20% reduction in the number of generals and admirals. Additionally, the US Supreme Court has lifted previous limitations on deportations to third countries.
