Europe's Oldest King, Norway's Harald V, Dies Aged 89

King Harald V of Norway, who held the distinction of being Europe's longest-serving monarch, has passed away at 89 years old, concluding a 35-year reign. The Royal House of Norway announced his demise on its official website, stating that he died on Friday, August 28, shortly after 6:35 am.

His son, Haakon, now ascends to the throne as his successor. King Harald V is survived by his wife of 57 years, Queen Sonja, their two children, and five grandchildren. His granddaughter, Ingrid Alexandra, is now positioned as the heir to the Norwegian throne. The late King was renowned for modernizing the royal institution during his time but notably chose not to follow the trend of other elderly monarchs who have recently abdicated. With his passing, his son automatically becomes King Haakon VIII.

Harald was crowned king in January 1991, following the death of his British-born father, King Olav V. His reign coincided with a significant economic boom in Norway, largely fueled by its oil and gas sector. Born in Asker, near Oslo, in 1937, Harald made history as the first Norwegian prince to be born on national soil since King Olav IV in 1370. For centuries prior, Norway lacked an indigenous monarch until Harald's grandfather, Haakon VII, was elected king after the 1905 dissolution of the union with Sweden.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed the nation's grief, stating, “a whole nation is in mourning” after Harald’s death. He added that the people of Norway were “left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway.” The government has declared a national period of mourning, as citizens gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo to pay their respects. Tributes poured in from various European royal houses, including those in Sweden, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, as well as from political leaders across the continent.

Britain’s King Charles remarked that his family was grieving a “friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades.” Similarly, Denmark’s King Frederik and Queen Mary remembered Harald as a “fine man with a twinkle in his eye and a big heart.” The late monarch’s health had severely declined in the days leading up to his death, following his admission to the hospital for “fluid accumulation in the body” caused by a blood disorder, which later led to an infection.
