Moscow Brands US Media's NATO Attack Allegations as 'Scare Stories'

On Thursday, August 27, the Russian government rejected claims circulating in US media about a potential assault on NATO, labelling them as mere "scare stories." These assertions emerged after a significant visit by the CIA director to Moscow. American intelligence evaluations, as reported by various US news sources, hinted that Russia might attempt to challenge the alliance through restricted military actions in the near future.

During a routine press briefing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed inquiries regarding these allegations, stating unequivocally: “A lot of such scare stories are being published right now. Of course, they have nothing to do with reality.”

Turning his attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Peskov emphasized Russia's preference to “achieve its objectives by peaceful means, but in the absence of an opportunity to do so, it is continuing the special military operation.” He further criticized European countries supporting Kyiv, asserting that Moscow is encountering a “very aggressive policy” from these nations.

Moscow has consistently upheld its demand for a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the eastern Donbas region. This remains a prerequisite for any direct peace talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Earlier the same Thursday, Sergei Naryshkin, who leads Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, commented on his meeting with the CIA director. He characterized it as a routine exchange focused on issues typically handled by intelligence agencies.

Similarly, US President Donald Trump downplayed the significance of the Moscow discussions, suggesting they centered mainly on the Ukrainian situation and dismissing any broader geopolitical warning speculation.

This visit by the CIA director represents one of the most senior-level engagements between American and Russian officials since the full-scale conflict in Ukraine erupted in 2022. It takes place amidst continuous military operations on the front lines, where the widespread deployment of drones has significantly curtailed extensive troop movements for both sides.
