US Lifts Syria's 'State Sponsor of Terr*rism' Tag, Boosts Investment Hope

The United States has officially removed Syria from its list of countries designated as state sponsors of terr*rism, effectively revoking a classification that had been in place for decades and significantly hindered foreign investment. In a related development, the US Department of State also rescinded its classification of the al-Nusrah Front, widely recognized as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), as a global terr*rist entity.

Subsequently, the Treasury Department implemented measures to provide sanctions relief. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that "Today’s action will help foster additional investment in Syria to promote political and economic stability." According to the Treasury, these steps align with President Donald Trump's commitment to provide sanctions relief to Syria.

However, the department emphasized that lifting these restrictions on Syria "does not change Treasury’s posture with regards to countering global terr*rism and our commitment to hold bad actors in Syria accountable." The group known as HTS was previously identified as the Al-Nusra Front, which served as Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria. Nevertheless, it severed its connections with the jihadist organization in 2016 and has since attempted to improve its public perception.

This decision follows an initial announcement by the United States in July regarding its intention to remove Syria from the terror sponsorship list, a development widely interpreted as a show of confidence in leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. This particular action coincided with a meeting between President Trump and Sharaa, a former jihadist who has been working to present himself as a figure of unity, held on the fringes of a NATO summit in Turkey. This meeting occurred after the 2024 overthrow of the Assad family, who had governed the nation with absolute authority for fifty years.
