US Mission Cautions Dual Citizens: Use American Passport for US Travel

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a reminder to Nigerians who hold dual citizenship, including those with American nationality, to ensure they use a valid US passport when travelling to or from the United States. This directive, as stated on the mission's official social media account on Sunday, July 26, applies to all US citizens, regardless of their age or dual nationality status. The mission emphasized that US citizens, including dual nationals, are required to enter and depart the US using a valid American passport. Furthermore, the US Department of Homeland Security has been known to deny or cancel Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) applications submitted by dual-national US citizens who use their foreign passports. The US Mission also advised American citizens residing abroad, including those in Nigeria, to verify the validity of their US passports before making travel arrangements to the US, noting that many countries require a minimum of six months' passport validity for entry. Additionally, the mission reminded travellers that if their US passport is expired or nearing expiration, they should renew it before embarking on their trip.
