In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has launched a massive drone attack on Moscow, marking the largest such assault on the Russian capital in two years. According to reports from the Russian state-run news agency TASS, the attack resulted in damage to infrastructure, fires, and debris scattered across various areas of the capital region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that air defenses successfully shot down over four dozen drones headed for the city overnight into Thursday. The attack was part of a broader Ukrainian operation targeting multiple regions of Russia, with air defenses activated across several areas. As a precautionary measure, flights at all major Moscow airports were temporarily suspended on Thursday, as reported by Reuters, citing the Russian aviation agency. This recent surge in attacks aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's strategy to target Russian energy infrastructure, which he believes is crucial in compelling Moscow to bring an end to the war. In a Telegram post from Brussels, where he was attending meetings with NATO leaders, Zelensky described Thursday's attacks as 'a fully justified response to Russian strikes on our cities and communities.' He also highlighted the precision and effectiveness of Ukraine's mid-range strikes and long-range sanctions, noting that all partners have taken notice in recent days. Among the targets of the Ukrainian attack was the Moscow Oil Refinery, located in the southeastern district of Kapotnya, which had also been struck and damaged earlier in the week. Video footage geolocated by CNN showed thick black smoke billowing from a section of the refinery before a large explosion occurred in another part of the complex. Additionally, a large black plume of smoke was seen rising near Moscow's Sadovod trade center, and an apartment building in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, was damaged by falling debris. A shopping center in the capital was also impacted, according to TASS and local authorities. In response to the Ukrainian attack, Russia launched a major overnight barrage of its own, utilizing both missiles and drones, as reported by the Ukrainian Air Force. The strikes targeted several regions across Ukraine, affecting infrastructure essential for daily life, including energy and gas facilities far from the front lines. Ukraine has been conducting extensive drone attacks against Russian refineries and military facilities in recent months, with targets including naval facilities, oil depots, and terminals. Some of these attacks occurred in the Leningrad region, where St. Petersburg recently hosted a global economic forum. It is worth noting that Russia's state budget relies heavily on oil earnings, which account for at least one-third of its revenue, according to analysts. Since the beginning of the Ukraine war, the pool of buyers for Russian oil has significantly decreased due to stricter sanctions imposed by the European Union and Washington. The attack on Thursday came shortly after world leaders gathered at the G7 summit in France, where Zelensky stated that 'everyone' had agreed to assist Ukraine in securing more air defense capabilities. US President Donald Trump had also encouraged Russia to agree to a deal that would bring an end to the war, now in its fifth year. At a gathering of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed the war with Zelensky during a meeting a day earlier. Rutte commended Ukraine's performance, citing heavy monthly Russian losses, and stated that discussions are ongoing with all allies to ensure Ukraine has the necessary support, including missile interceptors and weapons systems. The NATO meeting took place at a pivotal time for Europe, which has been responding to shifting diplomatic dynamics and discussions regarding the future allocation of US hardware and forces stationed in Europe. As part of the NATO alliance, the US participates in a cooperative framework known as the 'NATO Force Model,' where participating countries provide their support and resources for joint defense, security, and crisis response. Rutte downplayed the potential impact of shifts in US resources, stating that Europeans are already filling the gap. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that NATO is now more capable of tackling the conventional defense of Europe, with many countries increasing their commitments, although some need to do more.
