Chiwetalu Agu Slams Societal Double Standards on S*xual History, Wealth

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has recently highlighted what he perceives as a significant gender imbalance in how individuals are judged based on their past romantic encounters. In a video widely circulated online, Agu articulated that a man could engage in s*xual relationships with numerous women and still readily secure a partner for marriage. Conversely, he noted, a woman with a considerably smaller number of past partners might face rejection specifically due to her history.

Agu stated, “A man can sleep with 30 to 40 women and still end up with the woman who is ready to settle down with him. A woman can sleep with 7 to 10 men and end up being rejected simply because of her past.” He further contended that the social repercussions for identical behaviours often vary drastically depending on one's gender, suggesting that evidence of a man’s past liaisons might be minimal, while a woman’s past could become a critical impediment.

Beyond s*xual history, Agu also cautioned against the misconception that everyone faces identical consequences for their decisions, particularly when financial resources differ. He used the example of drug abuse to illustrate his point: a child from a wealthy background might have access to international rehabilitation and treatment if addiction issues arise, whereas someone without comparable financial means would likely struggle immensely to recover from such consequences.

“The behaviour is the same, but the resources available to deal with the consequences are different,” he remarked. Agu concluded by urging individuals to carefully consider the potential ramifications of their actions before making choices, emphasizing that true wisdom lies in understanding one's limitations and what one cannot afford to undertake.
