Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has explicitly stated that the country neither possesses nuclear weapons nor has it ever pursued a nuclear weapons development program. This significant declaration was made by Ambassador Ibrahim during his address at the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, which took place in New York.

Ambassador Ibrahim underscored Nigeria's unwavering commitment to non-proliferation, affirming, "Nigeria neither possesses nuclear weapons nor has it ever pursued a nuclear weapons programme. We maintain key institutions and regulatory mechanisms to monitor and address issues relating to weapons of mass destruction." He reiterated the nation's robust framework for oversight in this critical area.

The Ambassador further identified the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission as the principal governmental body tasked with supervising all nuclear-related activities and the comprehensive regulatory framework within the country. Concluding his remarks, Ibrahim urged all member states of the United Nations to sustain their collective efforts towards the global elimination of nuclear testing, emphasizing its paramount importance for cultivating a safer world, free from the existential threat posed by nuclear armaments.
