Nigerian Army Reshuffles Senior Ranks, Installs New Theatre Commander

The Nigerian Army has announced a significant restructuring of its top leadership, involving the redeployment of several generals and brigadier generals to crucial command, operational, and staff positions across the service. These new appointments were sanctioned by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. The move is aimed at bolstering operational effectiveness, enhancing leadership, and aligning the Army's command framework with Nigeria's evolving security landscape.

Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the development via the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Wednesday. She stated that the exercise prioritised critical operational theatres and strategic roles, ensuring that the 'right leadership, experience, and expertise' are deployed to achieve decisive outcomes.

Among the key changes, Major General IA Ajose has been moved from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to assume the role of Theatre Commander for the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI. Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served within Operation HADIN KAI, has been reassigned to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as the Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.

Further redeployments include Major General AM Alechenu, who transitions from Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre. Major General RT Utsaha has been moved from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to become the Commander of Defence Headquarters Garrison. Major General AM Umar now heads the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant, moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs, while Major General UM Alkali has been redeployed from the college to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.

Major General GS Muhammed has been appointed Director General of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, previously serving in the Office of the National Security Adviser. Major General JE Osifo has taken over as Chairman of the Military Pension Board, relocating from the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation. Additionally, Major General IE Ekpenyong has been reassigned to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director, Engineering Services.

At the brigadier general level, AA Bello has transferred from 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations. MS Adamu moves from the Nigerian Army Women Command to lead the newly established 8 Brigade as Commander, while MS Sule transitions from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to command the 27 Task Force Brigade. I Sule has also been redeployed from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to become Commander of 6 Division Garrison.

Other brigadier general appointments include E Azenda, who moves from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to command 2 Division Garrison, and AS Bugaje, who has been reassigned from 2 Division Garrison to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director, Administration.

The COAS urged the newly appointed officers to uphold the trust placed in them through 'exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to duty.' He further reminded them to remain dedicated to the Army’s constitutional mandate of safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity, and assisting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security. The Nigerian Army reiterated that this reshuffle underscores its commitment to maintaining a dynamic leadership and force-employment structure, designed to improve operational outcomes and strengthen joint and inter-agency collaboration, ultimately enhancing its capacity to address contemporary and emerging security threats in line with Nigeria's national security objectives.
