Six Lives Lost, Many Students Feared Trapped in Delhi Hostel Collapse

A student hostel in Delhi, India, has tragically collapsed, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least six individuals and leaving five others in critical condition. Rescue teams fear that approximately 40 additional students may be caught beneath the debris. The Delhi Fire Service confirmed receiving the initial report of the incident at 1:33 pm local time on Sunday, September 6, with 12 fire crews promptly dispatched to the devastating scene in the Satya Niketan area of the Indian capital.

Images from the site depict a substantial gathering of onlookers close to the wreckage, as emergency personnel diligently work to remove the fallen structure and access those believed to be trapped. Anil Kumar Sharma, a BJP politician representing the RK Puram constituency, disclosed that some of the students caught inside had managed to make phone calls. According to an NDTV report, an eyewitness at the time of the incident suggested that as many as 50 students could be buried under the rubble.

Nitin Jamwal, 19, a former resident who lived in the hostel until about a year ago, informed the Hindustan Times that the building was in a deplorable state. He recounted, "Everything here was bad here. The walls were cracking. Basement used to fill with water. Food was bad. There were two rooms on each floor." Jamwal's friend, Niteesh, is among those feared to be trapped. Online platforms have seen the circulation of a video recorded by a man pinned under the rubble, with bystanders urgently appealing for rescue. Further footage captured local residents making efforts to save survivors before the arrival of official disaster response teams.

The precise count of individuals present in the building when it collapsed remains unconfirmed. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conveyed her profound concern, stating that a neighbouring structure had been evacuated as a safety precaution. She affirmed, "Deeply concerned by the building collapse incident at Satya Niketan, RK Puram. Teams from DDMA, NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence are carrying out rescue operations on a war footing. The adjacent building has been vacated as a precautionary measure. Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families." The Chief Minister further emphasized that "the situation is being closely monitored and all concerned agencies are working in coordination. The safety and well-being of every citizen remain our highest priority.” A video circulating online depicted the swift collapse, alongside a poignant quote from a GenZ student: "Not just collapse of a hostel, But A collapse of the system."
