Kano/Jigawa Customs Command Recovers 48 Endangered Animals

The Kano/Jigawa Customs Area Command has successfully intercepted a significant haul of no less than 48 endangered wildlife species within a single day. This disclosure was made by the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Controller of Customs Usman Adamu, during a press briefing held on Friday at the Customs House in Bompai, Kano.

Adamu detailed that the animals, which were seized on August 25, 2026, included a diverse collection of 15 primates, such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and bush babies. The intercepted lot also featured various wild cats, specifically civets and caracals, alongside 25 wild birds, among them greater bustards and rock fowls. Additionally, two albino crocodiles and a honey badger were part of the seizure.

Three individuals apprehended in connection with this illicit wildlife trafficking have been transferred to the Special Wildlife Office at the NCS Headquarters for further investigation and appropriate action. According to Adamu, this particular interception is believed to be the largest and most varied single seizure of wildlife ever documented in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service, and potentially across the entire West African sub-region.

He emphasized that "This interception underscores the scale and gravity of the trafficking attempt. It also shows the Command’s intensified resolve to protect our biodiversity and uphold obligations under international conventions and Section 55(1)(i) of the NCS Act 2023." The acting comptroller further stated that the wide array of seizures and detentions recorded during the period demonstrates the command's ongoing dedication to enforcing existing Customs laws.

From July 2026 to the present date, the command has recorded seizures and detentions with a total Duty Paid Value exceeding N2 billion. Adamu also highlighted the command's financial performance, noting that during the half-year press briefing, a revenue of N63.07 billion was generated. Currently, the year-to-date revenue stands at N88.92 billion, indicating an increase of approximately N25 billion between July 2026 and now.

Notably, July 2026 marked the highest monthly collection in the command's history, with over N14 billion generated. Adamu reiterated the commitment of his officers, stating, "Our officers will continue to remain vigilant in identifying and preventing activities that fall outside these laws."
