Jason Arday's Memoir Launched Amidst Plagiarism Controversy, Cambridge Exit

Jason Arday, a Black British academic, has released his memoir in the United States this Tuesday, just days after his resignation from Cambridge University. Arday has been at the centre of a heated dispute involving claims of plagiarism and accusations of racism.

British right-wing media outlets and commentators have amplified the allegations against Arday, suggesting he unfairly benefited from diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The controversy ignited when various academics and media reports accused Arday, who became Cambridge University’s youngest Black professor in 2023, of plagiarising sections of his doctoral thesis. His recently published memoir, titled “Great and Unfortunate Things,” has also come under scrutiny.

Arday, diagnosed with autism, stated that he was non-verbal until the age of 11 and only acquired literacy skills at 18. He went on to become a professor of sociology of education at Cambridge at 37. In his book, Arday recounts, “Miraculously, just a few days shy of my 12th birthday, I spoke.”

His British publisher has firmly stated that “no allegations of plagiarism have been made with respect to” the memoir. In an excerpt from the book, Arday reflects on his journey, writing, “What if I have completely overestimated my capabilities? What if my story ends up being a cautionary tale like Icarus about flying too close to the sun?”

Cambridge University announced on Friday that it would continue its investigation into Arday’s appointment and tenure, following his resignation, which he attributed to pressure from the contentious dispute. Arday confirmed his departure from both his professorial role at the university and his fellowship at Jesus College.

Major British newspapers, The Times of London and The Telegraph, have published several investigative reports concerning Arday’s academic work and personal life. While Arday has acknowledged making mistakes, he asserted that he was being unfairly “portrayed to be a liar and a fantasist and an academic fraud.” He also alleged that the “campaign to unseat me from my position” was racially motivated.

The initial plagiarism allegations against Arday emerged in July, brought forward by Nathan Cofnas, a US academic who identifies as a “race realist.” Cofnas’s research affiliation with a Cambridge college was terminated in 2024 amidst his own racism accusations.
