Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasized the need for increased funding to address the state's massive infrastructure demands. Speaking on a Fresh FM radio program, Hamzat noted that the state's rapid population growth and rising costs have put a strain on its resources. He identified key areas such as transportation, housing, healthcare, and education as requiring substantial investment. Hamzat stated that despite the government's efforts to invest in these sectors, the available resources are still insufficient to meet the scale of demand. The deputy governor highlighted the high cost of road rehabilitation, citing that the estimated requirement in 2011 was over N700 billion. He also mentioned that major projects like the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge require significant financial commitment. Hamzat explained that the state's Public Works Corporation has expanded its capacity to address road maintenance, increasing the number of maintenance teams from 14 to 34. He emphasized the importance of integrating drainage and water management into road infrastructure planning, given the state's low-lying terrain. Hamzat also stressed the need for a functional mortgage system to enable residents to own homes, and defended the quality of public schools in Lagos. He called for innovative approaches to tackle the housing shortage and expand access to affordable homes.
