N1m Prize: Catholic Group Empowers Youngsters Via Bible Quiz

The organizers of the Lamp and Light Bible Trivia competition have revealed their commitment to advancing education and empowering young individuals. This is achieved through a structured program that includes supervised cash prizes, mentorship, and leadership development initiatives, all geared towards preparing participants for future achievements.

A statement released to The PUNCH on Thursday detailed the prize structure: the grand winner of the competition received a substantial N1 million, while the first and second runners-up were awarded N700,000 and N500,000 respectively. In addition to the monetary rewards, the top three contestants also received tablet devices. Other finalists were not left out, as they each went home with N150,000 as consolation prizes. The organizers, however, clarified that these cash incentives are not merely prizes but are specifically designated as educational support. They stated that the ministry maintains close oversight on how these funds are utilized. "The cash awards are intended to support the winners’ education and other approved forms of empowerment. The Youth and Children Ministry carefully supervises the use of the funds to ensure that this objective is achieved," the statement affirmed.

Carllister Ejinkeonye, who serves as both the competition’s Producer and National Director of the Youth and Children Ministry, elaborated that the initiative has expanded beyond a simple Bible competition. It has grown into a comprehensive platform fostering spiritual growth, personal development, and academic excellence. She observed that many participants have become "walking Bibles," a testament to their dedication to studying and discussing the Scriptures, which has in turn fortified their faith, discipline, and character.

Ethelbert Obi, the project coordinator, noted that the program is successfully reigniting young people's interest in godliness and diligent Bible study. Concurrently, it creates avenues for financial and personal empowerment. Obi highlighted that involvement in the competition has transformed lives, deepened contestants’ understanding of the Scriptures, and provided numerous youths with the necessary resources to pursue their educational aspirations.

This year's edition saw a remarkable 20 percent surge in participation compared to its inaugural season, attracting contestants not only from Nigeria but also from Ghana and the Republic of Benin. Beyond the quiz itself, participants engaged in a residential camp that featured intensive Bible study, mentorship sessions, career guidance, counselling, entrepreneurship training, and academic workshops, all meticulously designed to equip them for leadership roles and nation-building.

Aloysius Ohanebo, the General Superintendent of the Watchman Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement, underscored that the program forms a vital part of their efforts to offer wholesome alternatives that draw young people closer to God. "The voice of the Watchman must be heard, and the time has come for the Movement to match the world’s efforts while countering the devil’s advance in the lives of young people—reality show for reality show, quiz for quiz," Ohanebo declared.
