A school security guard in Abia State has been handed a one-year prison sentence following his conviction for the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old pupil. This judgment has been met with a mixed reaction from child protection advocates, who view it as a crucial step towards ensuring accountability and delivering justice for the young survivor.

Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI) and the Child Protection Network (CPN), Abia State Chapter, in a joint statement, acknowledged the conviction as a significant stride. However, they simultaneously stressed the urgent need for robust enhancements to child protection legislation, enforcement mechanisms, and sentencing guidelines. Their aim is to guarantee that penalties for offenses against children are sufficiently stringent to serve as effective deterrents.

According to the statement, "While VIDI and CPN welcome the conviction as an important step towards accountability and justice for the child survivor, the outcome also highlights the need for continued strengthening of child protection laws, enforcement mechanisms, and sentencing frameworks to ensure that sanctions for offences against children serve as effective deterrents." The organizations further emphasized that "This judgment sends a clear message that child abuse has no place in our schools or communities and that perpetrators of offences against children can be held accountable through the justice system."

VIDI and CPN extended commendation to the Nigeria Police Force, the prosecution team, the judiciary, and all other stakeholders whose dedicated efforts were instrumental in the successful prosecution of this case. They also recognized the immense courage displayed by the child survivor and her parents throughout the challenging legal process of seeking justice.

As an organization committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals, VIDI reaffirmed its dedication to preventing violence against children, providing support to survivors, strengthening referral pathways, and collaborating with government institutions, schools, communities, and partners. Their overarching goal is to foster safe environments where every child can learn, develop, and flourish. The statement concluded by asserting, "This conviction is not only a legal outcome; it is a reaffirmation that children deserve protection, justice, and a voice."
