BUK Imposes Ban on Electric Vehicle Charging Over Soaring Electricity Costs

In a bid to curb the escalating cost of electricity, the management of Bayero University, Kano, has taken a decisive step by banning the charging of privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles within its campuses. This directive, which takes immediate effect, was made public through a statement issued by the university's spokesperson, Lamara Garba, on Tuesday. According to Garba, the university has been shouldering a significant financial burden due to the widespread practice of using its electricity supply to charge personal electric vehicles. The statement highlighted that this practice has led to a substantial increase in the university's electricity bills, which is unsustainable at a time when the institution is striving for prudent resource management. As a result, the management has outlawed the charging of electric motorcycles and other privately owned electric vehicles on all university premises. The directive applies to staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators, and all other users of electric vehicles, with a warning that non-compliance will attract disciplinary action in line with the university's rules and regulations. To ensure adherence to this ban, the university has instructed provosts, deans, directors, and heads of departments to monitor their respective areas and report any violations. Additionally, a monitoring team will conduct regular patrols across the campuses to enforce compliance. The university is urging its community members and visitors to cooperate with this directive, emphasizing its necessity in reducing energy costs and promoting the judicious use of university resources.
