Egejurum Onyedikachi, one of three Nigerian students who clinched gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome, Italy, has recounted his path to becoming the world's top performer in the Mathematics Primary Category. The young scholar described the initial phase of the competition as tough but affirmed that he maintained unwavering focus and resolve throughout the contest.

“It went well, at least I’m happy at the end. Although at the beginning it was kind of rough, I didn’t cry, I was just sad. But at the ending I came victorious and brought home a gold medal to Nigeria,” Onyedikachi stated. His remarkable accomplishment has garnered widespread acclaim from Nigerians, who have lauded his perseverance, determination, and exceptional academic prowess on the global platform. This victory follows the impressive achievement of three Nigerian students who collectively earned gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad's grand finale, marking a significant milestone for the nation in the international academic arena.

The announcement of their success was made by education advocate and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, who facilitated the students' participation after they distinguished themselves at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. Sharing the news on X, Onyia initially posted, “The wait is over. We have two golds: Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso. We are the best in the world!” He later confirmed that Onyedikachi had also been awarded a gold medal, with Don Anele securing an additional gold medal in Science. “More good news. Don Anele Munachimso also won gold in Science. He is the best in world science. Remember, he is the best in IGCSE Chemistry in Nigeria. The investment is worth it,” Onyia updated. In a subsequent post, he declared, “Onyedikachi Egejurum got a Gold. He is the best in Mathematics in the world Primary Category. This is the beginning of greatness for the country.”

The International STEM Olympiad, hosted at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, drew competitors from over 150 nations, who vied in various Mathematics and Science events. The three triumphant students—11-year-old Egejurum Onyedikachi, 13-year-old Onwubiko Chimdiebube, and 17-year-old Don Anele Munachimso—qualified to represent Nigeria after emerging as top contestants in the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. This regional competition, organized by Onyia, saw participation from more than 11,500 individuals across the region.

Following their stellar performance at the regional level, Onyia sponsored their journey to the International STEM Olympiad, covering all expenses including registration fees, visas, flights, accommodation, and other travel logistics, enabling them to compete in Rome. Accompanied by their teachers, the students represented Nigeria across the primary, junior, and senior categories at the global contest, delivering an outstanding display that has earned widespread commendation nationwide.
