UK Teacher Jamie Varley Found Guilty of Heinous Crimes Against Adopted Toddler

In a shocking turn of events, a UK teacher, Jamie Varley, 37, has been found guilty of the gruesome murder and sexual abuse of his adopted 13-month-old son, Preston Davey. The toddler's life was cut short in July 2023, and the details of the case have left many in shock. Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, a financial sales manager, had adopted Preston in April 2023. However, during the four months the child was in their care, he suffered unimaginable abuse, including 40 traumatic injuries. The couple's actions were described as 'pure evil' by Det Ch Insp Andy Fallows, who stated that they had made Preston's short life a 'harrowing tale of misery and pain.' Preston's mother, Sarah Davey, had a troubled past, having been jailed at 14 for the murder of a frail pensioner in 1998. After being taken into care, Preston was placed with foster parents at five days old and remained with them for 10 months before being adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. The trial at Preston Crown Court heard that Preston was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused, and physically assaulted during his time with the couple. The toddler was also subjected to indecent images and videos being taken of him. Despite being taken to the hospital three times with suspicious bruises, the couple's explanations were initially accepted. However, when Preston was rushed to the hospital unresponsive on July 27, the truth began to unravel. A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was acute upper airways obstruction by an object or objects inserted into his mouth, ruling out drowning as the cause. Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley will be sentenced on Thursday. The case has sparked an independent Child Safeguarding Practice Review to examine the handling of Preston's safeguarding. Regional adoption agency, Adoption Now, expressed its deep upset over the case, stating that it follows a 'strict and rigorous process' in assessing and approving adopters. The agency's thoughts are with everyone affected by the 'truly awful crimes.' Oldham Council also expressed its condolences, stating that the death of any child is a tragedy, but this case is particularly 'heart-wrenching and disturbing.' The council is thankful that the perpetrators have been convicted and will continue to support those affected by the case.
