A devastating accident occurred in Belgium on Tuesday, May 26, when a train collided with a school bus at a railroad crossing in Buggenhout, approximately 15 miles northwest of Brussels. The incident resulted in the loss of four lives, including two children, and left several others injured. According to reports, there were nine individuals on the bus at the time of the accident: a driver, a chaperone, and seven children, who were believed to be of middle school and high school age. Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke initially announced the fatalities, which were later confirmed by a spokesperson for the public prosecutor. The spokesperson revealed that the victims included students aged 12 and 15, the 49-year-old driver, and a 27-year-old chaperone. Five students were hospitalized with serious injuries and are currently in a critical but stable condition. The students were en route to the Richtpunt campus Buggenhout, a special education school located less than a mile from the railroad crossing. Thomas Baeken, a representative of rail track operator Infrabel, stated that the collision occurred at 8:08 a.m. and that footage showed the barriers were down and the traffic lights were red. Baeken expressed puzzlement over the circumstances surrounding the accident, as the train was already braking and the driver had applied the emergency brake. Approximately 100 passengers were on the train at the time, but none were injured, although one person was taken to the hospital for shock. In the aftermath of the accident, some trains have been cancelled, with replacement buses being deployed. Officials, including Belgium's Prime Minister, Bart De Wever, and Interior Minister, Bernard Quintin, have expressed their condolences and paid tribute to the victims. The local community has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with Buggenhout mayor Geert Hermans thanking the emergency services for their efforts.
