Ogun Correctional Service Foils Woman's Ethanol Smuggling Attempt into Ibara Centre

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, successfully thwarted an attempt by a woman, Shobowale Balikis, to introduce prohibited items into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta. The incident was brought to light through a statement released on Sunday, September 27, 2026, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka.

According to the PRO, Balikis was apprehended by correctional officers at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Saturday while allegedly trying to conceal a substance within a bottled water container. This container was purportedly intended for an inmate at the facility. Investigations revealed the substance to be ethanol, cunningly disguised as regular drinking water.

The prompt and decisive action of the officers ensured that the illicit substance did not reach any of the inmates within the correctional facility. Following her interception, the suspect has been transferred into the custody of the Nigeria Police for thorough investigation, with legal proceedings expected to commence in due course.

Controller of Corrections for the Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, used the opportunity to reaffirm the command’s unwavering stance against the introduction of contraband and any activities that could undermine the security and integrity of correctional facilities. He emphasized that this particular event highlights the service's continuous commitment to upholding safety, discipline, and order throughout the correctional system.
