Basement Discovery: Food-Covered Pledges Lead to Wisconsin Frat Leaders' Arrests

Authorities in Wisconsin have apprehended two fraternity officials following reports of approximately 30 young pledges, some partially clothed, being found in a basement amidst what appears to be a hazing event. Brayden J. Klein and Samuel N. Vane, both aged 20, were taken into custody on Wednesday. They face charges of misdemeanor hazing and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. These individuals are identified as leaders of an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity chapter, which reportedly lacks official recognition or accreditation from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Upon arrival at the fraternity residence, law enforcement officers reportedly encountered three dozen young individuals in the basement. A significant number of them were reportedly covered in various food items and condiments. The police statement also indicated that some pledges exhibited “visible injuries consistent with being physically assaulted.” Furthermore, officers noted the basement's thermostat was set to a sweltering 81 degrees Fahrenheit, creating an excessively hot and unpleasant environment. All occupants were subsequently escorted out of the premises, with police confirming that the “vast majority” of those present were 18 years old. The authorities reiterated that the fraternity chapter is neither recognised nor accredited by the university, with reports suggesting this disassociation occurred over ten years prior.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison has issued a statement affirming its commitment to addressing and preventing hazing incidents involving its students. The institution declared, “UW–Madison is fully committed to preventing and addressing hazing and takes all incidents involving our community seriously.” It added that “Any student determined to be in violation of law, regulation, or university policy may be subject to sanctions according to Wis. Admin. Code Chapter UWS 17.” The university elaborated that disciplinary actions could range from a formal written reprimand to more severe consequences, such as expulsion or mandated educational interventions. It is important to note that the accusations against Brayden J. Klein and Samuel N. Vane are yet to be substantiated in a court of law.
