Deadly Brawl Among Youths Shakes Jigawa Community

A tragic confrontation among young people in Rahamanu Village, located within the Aujara District of Jigawa State's Jahun Local Government Area, led to one death and another individual sustaining severe injuries. The violent incident unfolded late on Wednesday night.

Eyewitness accounts shared with our correspondent painted a scene of chaos and fear across the Fulani settlement. Residents, alerted by shouts emanating from the village centre, rushed to find youths engaged in a serious fight. Audu Falalu, a local who spoke via telephone, recounted, “We were at home around 11 pm when we heard shouting from the centre of the village. When we rushed there, we saw some youths fighting seriously. Two of them were already bleeding.”

Another resident, Haruna Adamu, stated that the community promptly contacted security forces to prevent further casualties. “The fight was very serious. We immediately called the NSCDC people in Aujara because we were afraid that more people would be killed. They came quickly,” Adamu explained, adding that security personnel and good Samaritans transported the injured to a local health centre.

Confirming the incident and providing further details, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, the Public Relations Officer for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Jigawa State Command, announced on Thursday night and Friday that the command had received a distress call. “On Wednesday, 23rd September 2026, at about 2330 hours, the NSCDC Aujara Divisional Office received a distress call from a member of the Fulani community reporting that some youths had engaged in a serious fight at Rahamanu Village, under Aujara District, Jahun Local Government Area,” Tijjani stated.

Upon receiving the alert, NSCDC personnel were immediately deployed to the area. Tijjani confirmed, “Two persons were found to have sustained serious injuries during the fight and were subsequently taken to the Primary Health Centre, Aujara, for medical attention.” Regrettably, one of the victims, Umar Abdullahi, 20, from Rahamanu Fulani Settlement, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The second victim, Sule Adamu, 19, from the same address, is currently stable and responding to treatment.

Regarding the ongoing investigation, Tijjani disclosed, “Preliminary investigation into the incident has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the fight and identify all persons involved.” He further revealed that two suspects have been apprehended by Police personnel attached to Aujara Division in connection with the clash, for further inquiry and potential prosecution. The NSCDC spokesperson assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.

The official cause of the clash remains undetermined at the time of this report. This incident highlights a growing concern in northern Nigeria, where violent youth clashes in rural areas are becoming more frequent. Factors such as unemployment, substance abuse, the availability of dangerous weapons, and the weakening of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms are believed to contribute to this trend. While Jigawa State, a predominantly rural region in the North-West zone with significant Fulani and agrarian populations, generally maintains peace, isolated incidents of youth violence occasionally disrupt its social stability.
