Texas Shocker: Teen Mum Leaves Infant, Documents with Stranger, Takes Uber

A startling incident unfolded in San Antonio, Texas, USA, where an 18-year-old mother stands accused of entrusting her one-month-old infant to a complete stranger at a bus stop. The reason cited for this unusual act was her reported unwillingness to continue caring for the child.

The event transpired around 10:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, September 13. Reports from KSAT 12 and Fox San Antonio indicate that Karla Ibarra, the young mother, approached Jennifer Benavides at a downtown San Antonio bus stop, initially requesting to use her phone. The interaction quickly escalated when Ibarra allegedly handed her baby boy to Benavides.

Benavides recounted the experience to KSAT 12, describing the infant as a “Very beautiful baby. Handsome. 1 month old.” She quoted Ibarra as saying, “Well, do you want him? I’m going to give him away. I’m going to give him to somebody.” Benavides further stated that Ibarra then proceeded to give her the child's essential documents, including his birth certificate, Medicaid card, and Social Security card.

According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), as cited by the aforementioned outlets, Ibarra abandoned her son with the stranger because she no longer desired to raise him. Realizing Ibarra's firm intention to part with the infant, Benavides sought assistance from a friend residing nearby. Both women then went to the friend's residence, from where Ibarra subsequently departed in an Uber, leaving her son behind.

Ibarra was later apprehended upon her return to the vicinity. Child Protective Services confirmed to KSAT 12 that the infant has since been placed under the care of other relatives. Reflecting on the incident, Benavides humbly stated, “I can’t take any credit for that. God just put me at the right place and the right time.” She also expressed dismay, noting, “It’s upsetting to know that even with all the resources that we have out there that someone would do this.”

Court records from Bexar County, cited by the San Antonio Express News, show that Karla Ibarra has been charged with abandoning and endangering a child with the intent to return. A judge has set her bail at $7,000.

This case highlights Texas' Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses Law, enacted in 1999. This legislation permits parents to legally and anonymously surrender an unharmed newborn, 60 days old or younger, at designated safe locations without facing legal consequences. Such approved locations include fire stations, EMS stations, and hospitals, where the infant must be physically handed over to an employee, unless a Safe Baby box is utilized.
