Suspect Held in Homicide of Mississippi Mother Tasia Fortune

Full Story
Authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, have apprehended a 51-year-old man in connection with the tragic death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four. Her body was discovered suspended from a tree behind a derelict property in the city.
The individual taken into custody has been identified as Jacques Ratliff. His arrest occurred on Friday following the execution of both search and arrest warrants related to the case. This development came just one day after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner officially declared Fortune’s death a homicide.
Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that Ratliff shared an "association" with Fortune, though she refrained from disclosing the precise nature of their relationship. Chief Brackney also confirmed that the investigation is actively ongoing and indicated that further arrests are anticipated.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed her emotional relief, stating she wept upon hearing of the arrest. However, Spivey noted that her family still seeks answers regarding the motive behind the crime and the specific evidence that led investigators to Ratliff. Spivey last saw her daughter on July 26 during a family gathering in Kentucky, shortly before Fortune returned to Mississippi.
Fortune's case has garnered considerable national attention, partly due to two other hanging deaths reported in Mississippi over the past year. Those earlier incidents were officially classified as su*cides by the authorities. Fortune, who had resided in Jackson for approximately a decade after relocating from Kentucky, is remembered by her family as a devout, intelligent, and athletic woman.
