Sokoto's Kebbe LGA Reels From Bandit Attack, Five Confirmed Dead

The Sokoto State Police Command has verified the fatalities resulting from a recent bandit incursion into various settlements within the Kebbe Local Government Area. This assault, which took place on Thursday evening, September 3, specifically targeted the Girkau community and other areas of Girkau Ward. In addition to the confirmed deaths, three individuals sustained injuries, and local residents also reported instances of abductions and livestock theft.

DSP Ahmed Rufai, the command's spokesperson, affirmed the incident during a phone interview with our correspondent on Friday. He stated, “Five persons were killed, three others were injured, while unspecified animals were rustled in the attack.” Rufai further explained that the police force is actively compiling more details regarding the event, including the precise number of individuals who might have been kidn*pped. He added, “We are still gathering information on the incident, including the number of people who may have been abducted. Further details will be made available as they emerge.”

This latest assault underscores ongoing security challenges plaguing Kebbe LGA, an area where inhabitants have frequently reported bandit attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling. Notably, the incident transpired just days after reports emerged that Kebbe town had been compelled to pay a N40 million levy, allegedly demanded by bandits on Tuesday afternoon. However, the police command refrained from confirming this purported levy in their official statement concerning the recent attack.

Despite the escalating incidents, Rufai reassured the local populace of the security agencies' unwavering dedication to protecting lives and assets within the region. He emphasized, “The police and other security agencies remain committed to protecting the lives and property of the people. We will continue to respond to security threats and work with communities to ensure their safety.”
