Drink-Driving Lands Real Madrid Star Raúl Asencio with Fine, Ban

Raúl Asencio, a defender for Spanish football giant Real Madrid, has been found guilty of a road safety violation following a drink-driving incident in Gran Canaria. A court source confirmed the conviction after an expedited trial held in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The 23-year-old center-back was handed a hefty fine of €14,400 and will have his driving license suspended for eight months.

The incident that led to the conviction took place on August 16. Police officers stopped Asencio at a routine traffic checkpoint, where a subsequent breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of 0.90 mg/l. This reading is more than three times the legal limit in Spain, which stands at 0.25 mg/l.

At the time of the offense, the Gran Canaria native was sidelined, recuperating from a hamstring injury he sustained in late July, and was not actively with the Real Madrid first-team squad. This conviction adds to Asencio's legal woes, as he is slated for another court appearance in Gran Canaria. That separate case, stemming from 2023, involves allegations of non-consensual sharing of a s*xual video. Three other former Real Madrid reserve players are also scheduled to stand trial in connection with the same video case. According to reports from Spanish media, Asencio is hopeful that the charges in the video case will be dropped if the women involved formally accept his apology during the court proceedings.
