Kano Community Spurns N10m Bribe Over Suspected Drug Vehicle — full story

Residents of Bajallabe, located near the FCE Gate 1 area within Kano metropolis, recently made headlines for refusing an alleged N10 million bribe. The offer was reportedly made to them in an attempt to cover up the discovery of a vehicle suspected of transporting illicit substances. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when locals grew suspicious of a Golf car, purportedly laden with what appeared to be illegal drugs, parked alongside a motorcycle close to a residential building in their neighbourhood.

This development was officially communicated by Lamara Garba, spokesperson for the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, in a statement released on Tuesday. According to the task force, community members approached the vehicle's driver to inquire about its contents after its presence in the vicinity raised alarms. It was at this point that the driver allegedly offered a sum of N10 million to community representatives and vigilante personnel present, hoping to make them disregard the discovery.

However, both the residents and vigilantes reportedly rejected the substantial offer, insisting instead that relevant authorities be promptly notified to investigate the matter thoroughly. Following this, the chairman of the local vigilante group contacted the task force's office to report the occurrence. As tensions reportedly escalated at the scene, the vigilante chairman also alerted the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.

Police officers swiftly arrived at the location, taking custody of the suspicious vehicle and the individuals involved. They subsequently transferred them to the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division for further investigation. Operatives from the Multi-Agency Task Force also joined other relevant agencies at the scene, offering support to the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

The task force clarified that the substances recovered from the vehicle have not yet been definitively identified as illicit drugs. They emphasized that these are merely suspected illicit substances, and their exact nature and legal status will be ascertained through a comprehensive investigation, including laboratory examination if deemed necessary.

Commending the exemplary actions of the residents and vigilantes, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, Chairman of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, lauded their courage, vigilance, and commitment to civic responsibility. He stated that their refusal of the alleged financial inducement underscored the critical role communities can play in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse. Rimin Gado further highlighted that the community's decision to involve law enforcement, rather than confronting suspects directly or resorting to self-help, was vital for maintaining peace and ensuring due process.

Additionally, the task force announced that the property where the suspected substances were found would be sealed, in line with a recent Executive Order signed by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Other necessary actions would also be implemented as prescribed by the order. The task force concluded by urging all residents across the state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the trafficking, distribution, storage, or sale of illicit drugs and other prohibited substances.
