Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving, Laughing Gas Possession After M3 Crash

Reports from Metro indicate that Raheem Sterling, a former prominent player for Chelsea, is currently confronting the possibility of a substantial prison term following charges of dangerous driving. The 31-year-old footballer, who is presently club-less after his contract with Chelsea was terminated and a subsequent unsuccessful period at Feyenoord, was involved in a Lamborghini crash on the M3 motorway in May.

Beyond dangerous driving, Sterling also stands accused of possessing nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and for refusing to provide a specimen after his apprehension by authorities. Should he be convicted, the charge of dangerous driving alone carries a potential maximum prison sentence of two years.

These accusations stem from a single-vehicle incident involving a Lamborghini on the M3 southbound, specifically near the Minley Interchange, which occurred on May 28, 2026. Official statements confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the collision, and fortunately, no injuries were sustained. Mr. Sterling is scheduled to make his court appearance at Basingstoke magistrates court on September 15.

His return to Chelsea saw then-manager Enzo Maresca explicitly communicate that Sterling would not feature in his future plans, leading the player to spend half a year sidelined from active play. Despite having 18 months remaining on his lucrative £325,000-a-week contract, Chelsea ultimately terminated Sterling's deal in January. Following this, the erstwhile star for Liverpool and Manchester City secured a transfer to the Dutch club Feyenoord in February. However, after only eight appearances, he has once again become a free agent.
