EFCC Drags Two to Court Over Alleged Bank Access Code Supply in Lagos

The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, brought two individuals, Gideon Bakpa Aghogho and Oscar Ebere Chukwuebuka, before Justice F.N. Ogazi at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. They face charges related to the alleged unlawful provision of bank access credentials.
The defendants, along with a third person identified as Scott, who is currently evading arrest, are accused on an eight-count charge. These counts primarily involve the illegal supply of access credentials to a bank's database. The EFCC, in an official statement, clarified that these alleged actions contravene Sections 27 and 28(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act of 2015, as subsequently amended in 2024.
One of the specific charges details that Gideon Bakpa Aghogho and Oscar Ebere Chukwuebuka, in concert with Scott (still at large), unlawfully conspired between July 24 and 26, 2026, in Lagos. Their alleged act involved supplying Aghogho's access code for use within the FCMB system. This was purportedly done using a local Administrative Credential (ITSD), which could grant access to the FCMB Virtual Center Platform, with the clear intent to commit an offense. This conduct, according to the prosecution, is contrary to Sections 27 and 28(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended in 2024), and is punishable under Section 28(2) of the same Act. The same charge was reiterated for both defendants.
Furthermore, another count alleges that Aghogho, between April and May 2025, also in Lagos, knowingly and without proper authorization, divulged sensitive access credentials. These included the bank’s server IP and domain details, facilitating unauthorized entry into FCMB’s database. This alleged disclosure was reportedly made in exchange for a sum of $15,000.
Upon the reading of the charges, the first defendant, Gideon Bakpa Aghogho, entered a plea of not guilty. However, the second defendant, Oscar Ebere Chukwuebuka, pleaded guilty to the accusations.
Following Aghogho’s not-guilty plea, the prosecution counsel, Bilkisu Buhari, requested the court to set a date for the commencement of trial and asked that he be remanded in a correctional facility. For Chukwuebuka, given his guilty plea, the prosecution indicated its intention to review the facts of the case against him.
Justice Ogazi subsequently adjourned the proceedings until August 27, 2026, for the review of facts and other necessary legal steps. The judge also issued an order for both defendants to be held in a Correctional centre until the next court date.
