A tragic mid-air incident in central Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, August 19, resulted in one fatality and injuries to two state troopers. The collision involved a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter and a small private airplane. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that a Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150 airplane crashed around 7:50 p.m. close to Carlisle Airport. This location is approximately 120 miles west of Philadelphia.

Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, who serves as the Acting Commissioner for the Pennsylvania State Police, elaborated on the circumstances. He stated that the police helicopter was conducting routine training exercises in a grassy area near Carlisle Airport when the unfortunate collision occurred. Bivens explained at a news briefing that "The Cessna plane, for an unknown reason, veered to the right at the last moment, struck the helicopter from the rear, hit the tail rotor and the main rotor, resulting in a violent crash."

The sole occupant of the Cessna plane, believed to be its pilot, tragically lost their life in the incident. Bivens confirmed, "The one known occupant of the Cessna did not survive the crash. We believe only the pilot was in the Cessna." Meanwhile, both state troopers aboard the helicopter were initially trapped but managed to exit the aircraft. They sustained injuries and were subsequently transported to a hospital.

Governor Josh Shapiro provided an update on the troopers' condition, expressing relief that they are expected to make a full recovery. "I’m pleased to say that after an aviation accident, two Pennsylvania State Troopers, while injured, are going to be okay," the Governor remarked during a news briefing. Earlier, Governor Shapiro had taken to social media, urging residents to join him and his wife, Lori, in prayer: "Lori and I are praying hard and we ask all of our fellow Pennsylvanians to join us." The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation by federal authorities.
