LAWMA Secures Jail Term for Lagos Resident Over Unlawful Waste Disposal

In a bid to curb the menace of improper waste disposal, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has successfully prosecuted a case against a 56-year-old man, Adebayo Samson, who was found guilty of illegally dumping waste along the PWD axis of Agege Motor Road in Lagos. According to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the offender was caught in the act by the agency's Monitoring and Enforcement Team on Friday, July 24, while engaging in the unlawful activity. The suspect was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate's Court in Bolade, Oshodi, where he pleaded guilty to the offence, leading to his conviction and sentencing to a four-week jail term. Dr Gbadegesin emphasized that the Lagos State Government is committed to maintaining a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, and therefore, will not tolerate indiscriminate waste disposal. He warned that anyone found disposing of waste in unauthorized locations, such as roads, road medians, drainage channels, or open spaces, will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law. The LAWMA boss urged residents to use only authorized Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators for their waste disposal needs and to report any incidents of unlawful waste disposal through the agency's official channels. He also assured residents that LAWMA will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to strengthen surveillance and enforcement operations across the state, promoting responsible environmental practices that protect public health and the environment. As part of its efforts to achieve a cleaner Lagos, LAWMA encourages residents to take ownership of environmental sanitation, which is a shared responsibility.
