Anambra High Court Issues D3ath Sentence for Teenager's R@pe-M8rder

The High Court of Anambra State, sitting in the Ogidi Judicial Division, has handed down a d3ath sentence by hanging to two individuals, Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu. The judgment, delivered by Justice U. I. Ndigwe on Friday in Suit No. HID/23C/2021, found the duo guilty on three counts: conspiracy, r@pe, and the m8rder of 17-year-old Jennifer Anene.

Justice Ndigwe affirmed that the prosecution had successfully proven all charges against the defendants beyond any reasonable doubt. She strongly condemned the actions of the convicts, describing them as a profound violation that necessitated accountability and had desecrated the fundamental values of society.

Principal State Counsel, Florence Abadom-Igweike, who led the prosecution, informed the court about the details surrounding the case. She stated that the victim, Jennifer Anene, who was reportedly mentally impaired, was declared missing on November 25, 2020, by her grandfather, Pius Anene.

According to the prosecution, three days following her disappearance, the wife of the first defendant, Elochukwu Belonwu, revealed to the victim's family that she had witnessed her husband and others s3xually assaulting Jennifer while the young girl cried for help. When confronted with this grave allegation, the first defendant denied any involvement, claiming his last sighting of the deceased was in the company of the second defendant, Chukwuebuka Ofokwu.

The court was further told that a mutual acquaintance of both defendants, identified only as Akpuchukwu, later brought the victim home in an unconscious state before absconding from the scene. Akpuchukwu remains at large. On the instruction of the police, Jennifer was immediately rushed to a hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced d3ad upon arrival.

A subsequent postmortem examination confirmed severe injuries, including bruises and vaginal tears, indicative of an aggravated s3xual assault. The prosecution presented two key witnesses: the victim's grandfather, Pius Anene, and the investigating police officer. Additionally, the postmortem report, the police investigation report, and photographic evidence were submitted as exhibits to the court. It was also noted by the prosecution that the crucial eyewitness, the first defendant's wife, chose not to testify despite being duly served with a court summons.

In their defence, both defendants denied the allegations levelled against them. However, Justice Ndigwe, in her judgment, concluded that the overwhelming evidence presented before the court unequivocally established the guilt of both Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu on all the charges, leading to their sentence of d3ath by hanging.
