Anambra Teacher in Police Custody Over Alleged Flogging Death of 12-Year-Old Pupil

In a significant development, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that Mrs Dim Ebere, a 47-year-old teacher, has turned herself in at the Neni Police Station. This move comes after a thorough manhunt was launched by the police following the death of a 12-year-old boy, who allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained from flogging at a school in Adazi-Enu, Anaocha Local Government Area. According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command's spokesperson, the suspect's surrender is a result of sustained efforts by the Safe School Protection Squad, in collaboration with officers from the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, as well as engagement with community leaders and stakeholders in Adazi-Ani. Ikenga stated that the suspect is currently being held in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation. The police command has assured the family of the deceased and the public that they are committed to ensuring justice is served in the matter. The command also urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, while encouraging them to provide useful information to aid ongoing investigations. The statement from the police command read, 'Following sustained manhunt operations by the Anambra State Police Command's Safe School Protection Squad, in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, and continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani, the principal suspect, Mrs Dim Ebere, aged 47, has voluntarily presented herself at the Neni Police Station. The suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, where the ongoing investigation will be concluded.' The command commended the Adazi-Ani community, traditional institution, and other stakeholders for their cooperation, which led to the suspect's surrender.
