According to Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, the Nigerian military has apprehended several foreign nationals suspected of having ties to the country's security challenges. Bwala made this revelation during an appearance on The Link Up Podcast, a discussion panel organized by EchoRoom. He emphasized that foreign interference in Nigeria's internal affairs is often driven by economic interests, including the country's oil resources, as well as past policy decisions made by the Federal Government. Bwala referenced a past incident where demonstrations erupted in parts of northern Nigeria, including Kano, with some individuals waving Russian flags. 'Our soldiers have made arrests of foreign nationals right in the middle of the country,' he stated. However, the military has chosen not to disclose the nationalities of those arrested, citing ongoing diplomatic engagements and the need to protect sensitive information. Bwala explained that in such situations, the government engages with the relevant countries, and prisoner exchanges may be considered. He also noted that friendly nations are often encouraged to take corrective measures discreetly, rather than facing public exposure. When questioned about allegations of the United States Central Intelligence Agency funding terrorism in Nigeria, Bwala declined to confirm or deny the claims but recalled a congressional hearing where a US lawmaker, Scott Perry, had asked a CIA director about the matter. On the activities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, Bwala stated that these groups have expanded their operations from the North-East to the North-West and are now pushing towards the North-Central. He assured that the government is working to contain this spread before it reaches southern Nigeria. Bwala denied allegations that the military shields terrorists during operations, describing such claims as speculative. He acknowledged, however, that the possibility of infiltration by informants cannot be ruled out, drawing parallels with past cases involving a senior police officer and the American whistleblower Edward Snowden. Bwala criticized the coordination failures between the Nigerian Army and the Air Force under the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari, stating that these issues have been addressed under the current administration. He praised President Bola Tinubu's performance, highlighting improvements in the country's foreign reserves and revenue, and suggested that Nigerians should decide for themselves whether the President deserves a second term.
