Senate Urges Makinde to Drop UN Probe Request for Ogbomoso Kidnap

The Nigerian Senate has strongly criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his suggestion that the United Nations should lead an investigation into the recent kidnapping of students and educators in Oriire Local Government Area of the state. During its plenary session on Tuesday, July 14, the legislative body admonished the governor, stating that his demand was trivialising a profoundly serious and traumatic event.
Governor Makinde had, in a broadcast to the state on Monday, July 13, publicly appealed to the United Nations and other global human rights and accountability organisations to delve into the circumstances surrounding the abduction incident.
Senator Adams Oshiomole, addressing the Senate plenary today, labelled Governor Makinde's call for a UN inquiry as “not statesmanly and politics taken too far.” The former Edo State governor implored the Senate to prevail upon Makinde to cease what he termed as “trivialising” the ongoing rescue efforts by seeking an international investigation into the details of the abduction and subsequent rescue. Following this, Senators present collectively voted to disapprove of Governor Makinde's proposal.
