Oyo Governor Makinde Urges UN to Probe School Abduction, Rescue Details

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has formally requested the United Nations (UN) and various international human rights and accountability organizations to launch an investigation into the recent abduction of pupils and teachers within the Oriire Local Government Area. Governor Makinde emphasized that the people of Nigeria deserve a thorough and transparent account of all events surrounding the incident, both before and after the victims were successfully rescued.
Following the emotional reunion of the abducted students and their educators with their families after 56 days in captivity, Governor Makinde delivered a statewide address. He asserted that the unique and serious nature of the mass abduction, along with its eventual resolution, warrants independent examination beyond the scope of domestic institutions alone. “The circumstances surrounding this abduction are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions,” Governor Makinde stated. “Therefore, with a full sense of responsibility as the Executive Governor of Oyo State, I call on the appropriate international human rights and accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to closely examine the facts surrounding this abduction and the circumstances of its resolution.”
Makinde clarified that his appeal was not intended to undermine Nigeria’s own institutions. Instead, he believes such external scrutiny would enhance public confidence by ensuring that the truth is uncovered and that anyone found responsible is held accountable. He reiterated, “Such scrutiny is not intended to undermine our institutions. Rather, it is intended to reinforce public confidence that the truth will be established and that every person found responsible, regardless of office, influence or affiliation, will be held accountable.”
The governor further highlighted that, according to the Nigerian Constitution, the primary responsibility for national security rests with the Federal Government and its associated security agencies. He concluded by stressing that Nigerians are entitled to a complete, transparent, and credible explanation of what transpired, who was culpable, whether any institutional failures, negligence, or collusion occurred at any level, and what preventative measures must now be implemented to prevent any community from enduring such a tragedy again.
