Colombian National Dies After ICE Agent Shooting in Maine Operation

A federal investigation is currently underway after an agent from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division fatally shot a Colombian citizen during an enforcement operation in Maine. The incident, which occurred on Monday morning in Biddeford, has sparked public outcry and protests concerning the agency's use of force.
ICE officers were reportedly conducting an operation to apprehend an individual with a final removal order when the shooting took place. According to ICE, the driver of a vehicle was shot after allegedly attempting to escape the scene. The agency stated, “When ICE attempted to stop an individual driving from the residence, the vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon.” They confirmed, “The driver of the vehicle was struck,” but did not elaborate on the specific reasons the officer perceived an immediate threat to public safety.
Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey confirmed that the ICE officer involved, who is part of the Enforcement and Removal Operations division, has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being probed. Frey noted, “Initial findings indicate that the subject attempted to flee in a vehicle in the direction of the officer and was fatally shot,” adding that the victim's identity would remain undisclosed until their family had been duly informed.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General has taken over the investigation. US Senator Susan Collins acknowledged the federal inquiry. Senator Angus King, an independent, initially understood the deceased was the target of an immigration arrest warrant, but was later corrected by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who clarified that the man was not the intended target of the operation.
The Colombian Embassy has verified the victim’s nationality and has formally requested additional details from US authorities. The embassy stated it had “requested information and clarification” from the Department of Homeland Security “regarding the circumstances surrounding this lamentable death and will continue to follow the case closely as the investigation progresses.”
The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition identified the deceased as a 26-year-old Colombian who was legally authorized to work in the United States. The organization mourned his death, stating, “He was a member of our community, a neighbor, and a human being whose life was cut tragically short.”
Following the shooting, demonstrations erupted in Biddeford, with protesters also gathering outside Senator Collins’ office to voice opposition to further funding for ICE. Senator Collins has since called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the events.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. Biddeford resident Lucas Scott recounted seeing unmarked vehicles surrounding a white sedan, followed by officers in ICE vests, before hearing at least four gunshots. Another witness, Mary Hayes, shared a poignant account of the victim’s family shortly after the incident. “I watched a wife fall to her knees looking at her husband’s dead body on the ground,” Hayes said. “I watched a little girl crying with a little pink backpack on because she’s never going to see her father again.”
