Oyo Police Detain Masquerade Over Fatal Incident During Ibadan Procession

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the apprehension of the Asoleke masquerade in connection with the alleged homicide of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde. The incident reportedly occurred during a masquerade procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan.

According to a statement released on Monday, July 6, by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Police Public Relations Officer, Sefiu Kehinde was reportedly assaulted by the masquerade and members of its entourage on Sunday, July 5, 2026, while the procession was ongoing.

Following the report of the incident at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters, a team of police operatives, under the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer for Mapo Division, swiftly moved to the scene. They transported the injured victim to a nearby medical facility for urgent care. However, medical personnel on duty at the hospital pronounced Mr. Kehinde deceased upon his arrival.

DSP Olayinka further stated that police detectives conducted a thorough examination and documentation of the crime scene. Subsequently, the family of the deceased was granted permission to proceed with the burial of Sefiu Kehinde, adhering to Islamic customs.

The command verified that the Asoleke masquerade is currently in custody regarding the matter, while efforts are underway to locate and apprehend four other individuals suspected to be accomplices, who are presently at large.
