Nigeria's leading anti-graft agency, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has announced the recovery of N5.79 billion in illicit funds between January and June 2026. This significant sum represents proceeds of crime, collected as part of the commission's extensive anti-corruption campaign aimed at bolstering national security and fostering accountability.

In a performance report obtained by our correspondent on Sunday, the ICPC highlighted that pervasive corruption continues to undermine Nigeria's security framework by diverting crucial resources meant for essential public services. The commission specifically stated, “Cash recovered within the review period amounted to N5,789,681,925.02.”

The ICPC emphasized that these recoveries are central to its broader strategy to safeguard public funds, reinforce institutional integrity, and promote transparency across all public institutions. The anti-graft body further clarified that by protecting public finances and championing transparency, it directly contributes to cultivating a more stable and secure environment for all Nigerians.

The commission reiterated its stance, saying, “In the face of Nigeria’s complex security challenges, corrupt practices remain critical enablers of instability, diverting essential resources from security infrastructure and eroding public trust.” It further stressed, “The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission plays a pivotal role in curtailing this threat. By safeguarding public funds, strengthening institutional integrity, and promoting transparency, the ICPC directly contributes to creating a more stable and secure environment for all Nigerians.”

Beyond asset recovery, the ICPC also detailed its operational activities, having received 271 petitions during the six-month period. Of these, 234 cases were assigned for thorough investigation. The agency successfully filed 25 cases before various courts, which led to 20 convictions. The ICPC confirmed, “The ICPC received 271 petitions. Of the 234 cases assigned for investigation, 25 cases were successfully filed in court, resulting in 20 convictions.”

Additionally, the commission ramped up its corruption prevention initiatives, conducting 33 systems studies and corruption risk assessments, alongside 42 corruption monitoring exercises. It also inaugurated 58 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units across numerous ministries, departments, and agencies. Public enlightenment on anti-corruption was significantly expanded through 291 sensitisation sessions and conferences, reaching an impressive 199,291 participants nationwide. To instill integrity among younger generations, the ICPC established 68 Anti-Corruption Clubs.

Commenting on the significance of these accomplishments, the ICPC stated, “These figures reflect more than statistics; they represent a reinforced front against impunity and a tangible recovery of public assets.” The commission concluded by affirming, “While the battle against corruption is far from over, the ICPC’s first-half performance in 2026 demonstrates measurable progress, enhanced public engagement, and a steadfast commitment to building a Nigeria where integrity underpins national security.”
