Ondo Magistrate Remands Man Over Alleged R@pe of Teen Hawker

An Akure Magistrate’s Court has ordered the detention of 20-year-old Samson Okegbua at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, following accusations of r@ping an 18-year-old girl. Okegbua faced arraignment on charges of r@pe, an offense contravening Sections 3(a), (b), and (c) of the Ondo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2020.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor ASP A. Jejeniwa informed the bench that the defendant is alleged to have engaged in unlawful carnal knowledge with the victim on June 11, 2026, around 2:30 p.m. The incident reportedly occurred in Ijagba Community, Ifon, a location falling within the court’s jurisdiction. Jejeniwa requested the court to keep the defendant in the correctional facility while awaiting legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The victim, whose identity remains protected, testified that she earns a living by hawking herbal medicine and ponmo in the area. She recounted that on the day of the alleged incident, Okegbua and another individual, identified only as Junior (who is currently at large), called her over, expressing interest in purchasing N200 worth of ponmo.
After she handed over the ponmo, the two men purportedly claimed they had no cash on them. The victim stated that Junior then left, supposedly to withdraw money from a Point of Sale (POS) operator, but returned shortly after, claiming the bank network was down. She further testified that both men then convinced her to accompany them to their residence to receive payment. Upon reaching the house, she alleged that Okegbua and his accomplice forcibly held her down, covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, and subsequently r@ped her.
